LAPL

The Light Aircraft Private Pilot's Licence (LAPL) is a sport or recreational pilot course and is designed to cover all aspects of good weather pleasure flying in aircraft with up to and a maximum takeoff mass of 2000kg. The LAPL syllabus includes both practical flight training and ground based study: everything you will need to know to pass the final Skill Test and qualify for your licence. The LAPL s a sub-ICAO licence and is therefore valid only in the UK.

Pre-course requirements

You must be a minimum of 17 years old to obtain your licence (you may start training from the age of 14 and fly solo from 16) and you must hold a LAPL or higher medical certificate before qualifying for the licence. You can obtain this certificate by attending a medical examination with an CAA approved Aero Medical Examiner (one of whom we have on staff).

  • The remaining hours may be dual or solo

You will also be required to take on-line multiple choice exams in 9 subjects (all of which may be taken in house):

  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Flight Performance & Planning
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Principles of Flight
  • Human Performance
  • Communications including Practical Test

Qualification

You will be training for a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence. This entitles you to fly aircraft within that class up to a maximum take-off mass of 2000kg, in the UK, for private and recreational purposes only. You may carry up to a maximum of 3 passengers but only after acquiring a further 10 hours experience. The licence permits Visual Flight Rules flight only and an instrument rating cannot be added. The LAPL is a sub-ICAO licence and cannot be used outside the UK.

This licence may be upgraded to a full UK PPL, on completion of an upgrade course.

Cost

Costs can be minimised by doing the following:

  • Flying regularly: once a week is fine.
  • Keeping up with the theoretical knowledge training: this complements your flying.
  • Look out the window and fly visually: it's not a flight simulator

Flying time is charged at our normal dual rate and payment is requested at the end of each individual lesson. For hourly training rates see our Price List.

We're always happy to discuss individual needs, so please feel free to give us a call on 07729 776206 or 07985 039718.
