PPL

The Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) permits you to act as the pilot in command of an aircraft for private use. A comprehensive qualification, the PPL syllabus includes both practical flight training and ground based study: everything you will need to know to pass the final flight test and obtain your licence. The UK PPL is valid for all aircraft registered in the UK and is acceptable worldwide as it meets the ICAO standard.

Pre-course requirements

You must be a minimum of 17 years old to obtain your licence (you may start training from the age of 14 and fly solo from 16) and you must hold an UK Class 2 medical certificate when you qualify for the licence. You can obtain this certificate by attending a medical examination with an CAA approved Aero Medical Examiner (one of whom we have on staff).

PPL

Training

The minimum requirements to qualify for the licence are:

  • 45 hours total time
  • 25 hours dual (i.e. with an instructor)
  • 10 hours solo including 5 solo cross country hours (i.e. away from your home airfield) to include a 150nm flight landing at two other airfields
  • A Skills Test with an CAA approved examiner (we have two on staff)

You will also be required to take on-line multiple choice exams in 9 subjects (all of which may be taken in house):

  • Air Law
  • Operational Procedures
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Flight Performance & Planning
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Principles of Flight
  • Human Performance
  • Communications including a Practical Test

Qualification

Your PPL will be valid for life and will include 'a single engine piston (SEP) class rating'. This entitles you to fly UK registered aircraft within that class up to a maximum take-off mass of 5700kg, worldwide, for private and recreational purposes. The SEP Rating will require to be revalidated every 24 months.

Cost

Costs can be minimised by doing the following:

  • Flying regularly: once a week is fine.
  • Keeping up with the theoretical knowledge training: this complements your flying.
  • Look out the window and fly visually: it's not a flight simulator

Flying time is charged at our normal dual rate and payment is requested at the end of each individual lesson. For hourly training rates see our Price List. We are always happy to discuss individual needs, so please feel free to give us a call on 07729 776206 or 07985 039718.
